At home with… Designer Marta Tice

Interior designer Marta Tice says she was fortunate to know what she wanted to do from an early age. “As a child,” she says, “I used to rearrange my room and charge 10 cent admission to view it!”

She received a bachelor’s degree in interior design from American University and later considered pursuing a degree in architecture, but instead founded Architectural Concepts & Interiors in 1997, which combines her decor expertise with an architectural design eye. The firm specializes in designing and remodeling kitchens and baths, but a new division of her work—Healing Homes, which utilizes the principles of Feng Shui—is quickly becoming a larger facet of her business. We asked her what she’s into lately and where she loves spending time in her own home.

What are you reading? Documentary readings from The Napoleonic era for my historic romantic novel that I am writing set in Alsace, Lorraine.

What are you listening to? Mozart for motivation, jazz with wine, Jimmy Buffett for rumba, Celtic women to unwind, big band music for ballroom dancing, rock’n’roll to swing dance and classical for inspiration.

What are you watching on TV? “Turn,” “Grace & Frankie” on Netflix, “Outlander” on Starz, PBS movies and all of the Jane Austen films.

What have you been eating and drinking lately? Drinking: Caramel and cranberry Smirnoff vodka, fine Virginia red wine from The Glass House Winery (and other local wineries). Eating: Eat Right For Your Blood Type [by Peter J. D’Adamo and Catherine Whitney]. It works; I feel great!

What are you currently working on? Renovating a tenant house conversion to a guest house at Wolf Trap Farm Inn in Gordonsville. We are remodeling the kitchen and bath and I will be providing the custom interior design. I have been working with the owner for years on this property, first refurbishing the Manor House, then remodeling a servants’ quarters as a guest house cottage and completing a barn conversion to a wedding pavilion in 2013. We get great reviews from the guests and it is a rewarding experience.
