In February, Jeremy Harvey left Charlottesville on the midnight train to Las Vegas. The shady local banker (and past C-VILLE cover boy) left his girlfriend and her children to remarry his ex-wife, 81-year-old newspaper heiress Betty Scripps. Now, however, it appears that Harvey, 62, has left Scripps after just three months. According to multiple sources familiar with his status, Harvey is back in town and living in his Colthurst mini-mansion with the girlfriend he demurred for Scripps. Scripps and Harvey were married for the first time from 1997 to 2004.
C-VILLE first covered Harvey’s escapades in a February 28 cover story, which described how he skipped town while facing two lawsuits in the Albemarle courts from former employees of his locally based investment bank, Quadrant Capital Group. Combined, the lawsuits sought more than $2 million dollars, charging slander, fraud and breach of contract. In February, it looked like Harvey was flat broke. But now that Harvey has married—and divorced—Scripps once again, he may be flush once more. According to the gossip page of the Palm Beach Daily News, Harvey is enjoying a divorce settlement that will pay him an alleged $500,000 per year for the rest of his life.
This is good news for Stan Manoogian, one of the former Quadrant employees behind the lawsuits against Harvey. On Friday, May 12—just as news of the Scripps-Harvey separation was spreading—Manoogian and Harvey reached a settlement, through mediation, for an undisclosed amount. Manoogian was originally seeking $2.2 million.
“I’m really pleased to have this over, pleased with the settlement. I’m just looking forward to moving on with my life and putting the episode behind me,” says Manoogian.
Through her lawyer, Scripps had “no comment” on anything relating to her personal life.
An additional suit by another former employee still awaits Harvey in Albemarle Circuit Court, and our hunch is that it will be settled soon, as well. —Nell Boeschenstein
