Goode: Happy B-day General Lee! [December 5]

Northern Virginia has been a fairly liberal enclave in what was once a solidly conservative state, so it may seem strange that Congressman Virgil Goode is going there today for some R&R. But he'll be in familiar company.

Northern Virginia has been a fairly liberal enclave in what was once a solidly conservative state, so it may seem strange that Congressman Virgil Goode is going there today for some R&R. But he’ll be in familiar company.

The Washington Times is reporting that Goode is set to deliver a speech at the Sons of Confederate Veterans’ (SCV) Jefferson Davis Camp 305 Christmas party (say that three times fast…without vomiting). The speech, of course, is on Robert E. Lee, that heroic Southern figure who just happened to find himself on the wrong side of history in a very, very major way.

Congressman Virgil Goode will address the Sons of Confederate Veterans today on the subject of why Robert E. Lee was such a kick-ass Virginian. Goode will also be presented the Sephen D. Lee Award.

Let’s let Richard T. Hines, a Washington lobbyist tell us all out Lee, shall we?

"It’s time that we are reminding folks of the principles that built this country, the loyalty that Robert E. Lee had to the small platoon, the loyalty that he had to the state, that’s what Robert E. Lee was all about," Hines told the Times.

Since he’s come all this way across the Potomac from his Capitol Hill office, Goode will be presented the Stephen D. Lee Award on the 200th anniversary of the other Lee’s birthday. That birthday, for the SCV anyway, is cause for celebration and a look back at the bad old days.
