Identity of killed pedestrian released

Police claim that Horace Clay Atkins, 63, crossed the street without using the pedestrian crosswalk and that he was in possession of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Last night, a little before 9:30pm, Charlottesville Police responded to an emergency call. A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on the 400 block of Avon Street.

Charlottesville resident Horace Clay Atkins, 63, of Avon Street was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, according to a city press release. The city says that the driver, an as yet unnamed 22-year-old, called emergency officials and has been cooperative.

Police claim that Atkins crossed the street without using the pedestrian crosswalk and that he was in possession of alcohol at the time of the incident.

According to the press release, the driver did not seem to have been consuming alcohol.
