The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce have released sales tax data compiled from UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center.
In Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville, retail sales during the first quarter of 2009 (January through March) are down 12.78 percent and 13.59 percent respectively.
In Augusta, sales were down 21.91 percent. Neighboring localities faired much better with a rise in Greene County of 10.62 percent, 10.53 in Waynesboro. The biggest rise was recorded in Louisa County: 38.13 percent.
Albemarle and Charlottesville’s total retail sales for the Q1 were $469 million, down $71 million from the same period last year.
