A month ago, Laurence Verga decided to run for Virginia’s Fifth Congressional Seat. Yesterday, Verga and his family announced that he has officially entered the race as a Republican candidate.
“I am running because I am concerned about the direction President Obama and the Democratic Congress is taking us,” he said at the kick-off of his campaign on the steps of the County Courthouse. “I am worried about our generation and our children’s generation.”
Verga, founder of Verga Trust/Verga Consulting, which owns over one million square feet of real estate, has never held political office. Yesterday, he began his campaign by highlighting his views on taxes and health care, and adhered to conservative values.
“We need to reduce individual tax burdens to grow our economy and create jobs,” he said. “Our government needs to stop the runaway spending that is causing us to have irresponsible debt.”
On health care, Verga pressed on the need to expand an employer-based payment system to an open market and competitive system. On energy independence, he had just a few words: “We need to drill here and we need to drill now.”
Verga said that if elected, he will defend the Second Amendment right to bear arms and he will defend life, “which I believe begins at conception.”
Verga lives in Albemarle County with his wife Elizabeth and his four young children.
Laurence Verga, along with his family, kicked off his campaign for the Fifth Congressional District seat currently held by Tom Perriello.
