New poll shows Deeds closing in on McDonnell

Overall, McDonnell is losing ground, but on the single question of taxes, McDonnell has a large lead over the Democratic gubernatorial candidate.

The latest Rasmussen poll has Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds within two points of Republican challenger Bob McDonnell.

According to the poll, 48 percent of those surveyed would vote for McDonnell, while 46 percent said they would vote for Deeds.

On the question of taxes, McDonnell has a large lead over Deeds: 50 percent favorable to the Republican versus 36 percent for Deeds.

On transportation, however, McDonnell has a much smaller lead: 38 percent against 36 percent for Deeds.

The new surge of support for Deeds could be attributed to the public release of McDonnell’s conservative law school thesis. Thirty percent of those surveyed said that the content of the thesis is very important in shaping their decision, 22 percent said it is somewhat important and 21 percent not important at all.
