Duke lax hammers Virginia 13-9 ends perfect season

Virginia’s quest for another perfect lacrosse season came to an end at home versus their arch-nemesis Duke.

The #1 Virginia lacrosse team just got hammered by Duke Saturday evening in front of a near capacity crowd in Charlottesville. The Hoos went up 3-0, but it was not enough as they lost their eighth straight to the Blue Devils.

Virginia’s superb goalie Adam Ghitelman (11 saves) just didn’t have it in the pipes Saturday, but he did have a very rare shot on goal. Unfortunately, he missed the shot as it was wildly high over the goal, but the very unusual coast-to-coast goalie shot absolutely fired up the home crowd.

Duke won the face-off battle by a wide margin (17-8), had more shots on goal (36-34), and won the ground ball battle (31-23). Duke just seemed to want this game more than the favored Hoos did. The Blue Devils were led by lightning-fast Ned Crotty who scored 3 goals. Zach Howell also had 3 goals on the evening.

No player on the UVA roster can say they have beaten Duke during their tenure at Virginia. The Hoos will get another chance Friday in the ACC Tournament in dreadful College Park as they play Duke in the semifinal game. College Park makes Tallahassee look like Paris. Go Hoos!
