Checking in with Megan Huddleston

What are you working on right now?

Well, songs. There are a bunch of new ones that are done, but it’s been so shuffley with the boys being gone that we’re just getting around to teaching them some of the new ones, and working on new ones. That’s always very exciting.

In Mister Baby, Megan Huddleston’s lyrics cover topics that range from “plotting to bury her lover to worrying about a local drowning victim.”

What were you doing when we called?

I am working out the details on how to put together a curtain for a client.

Tell us about your day job.

I don’t have one. Well, I do part-time work for Charmed Designworks, doing fun web stuff. And I get to go the post office a lot, which I love. And I sometimes teach sewing lessons and do sewing jobs. I spend a lot of time trying to book shows.

Locally, who would you like to collaborate with?

Phillip St. Ours. We have collaborated some and that guy is a brilliant, brilliant songwriter and musician. We wrote one song, “Mister Baby,” together and at the time we were working together, he was the drummer. But he’s sort of like in Dirty Dancing: “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

What music are you listening to right now?

Tim McGraw, “Red Ragtop.” It’s a very, very bizarre song. I can’t believe it made it onto Top 40 Country radio. It’s very cool and creepy.

What’s your first artistic memory?

I don’t know if it’s a memory of seeing it happen, or of seeing a photo of it happening. Mom used to paint everything, she used to decorate everything, and as soon as we could hold crayons or pencils, she’d let us do the same. Dad was really encouraging of that, too. Well, they did say no singing at the dinner table, I do remember that from early on. I remember my dad saying something about…he referred to me and Patrick, my brother, as Donnie and Marie. I had no idea what he was talking about.

What’s a piece of art you wish you owned?

I wish I had written “Friends in Low Places” [by Garth Brooks]. I wish I owned that song.

What’s your blind date dealbreaker?

I would never go on a blind date. I guess the blind-dateness of it would be the dealbreaker.

What would you prepare if you’re cooking for one?

Probably chips. You know, put some in a bowl and eat them.

What’s an item you would splurge on?

Good boots.

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

I think that I would take care of whatever my mother wanted, and I’d get my car souped-up. I would really like it to have a sort of pearlescent-coral and steel-grey striped leather interior. I’ve thought a lot about it.

Favorite artist outside your medium?

Can it be a tie? It would probably be Jeffrey Stockberger, the painter, and Aaron Farrington, the photographer.
