Virginia Loses in Overtime to Miami 70-68

Virginia’s Joe Harris missed a couple of huge free throws late, as UVA was done in by bad team free throw shooting, and critical defensive lapses throughout the second-half.

Well, Virginia lost another ACC game. This time it was 70-68 in an overtime road-game in Miami. The game was not televised locally, so I have to admit, I watched this game through the Hurricanes’ web GameTracker, and I have few visual clues how the Hoos blew this one.

Virginia has now lost 13 straight games in the state of Florida since 2001.

Miami’s bench scored 28 points to Virginia’s 4. K.T. Harrell was 0-5 from the field as he finished with one point.

Virginia (12-11, 3-6) was led by Mustapha Farrakhan who scored 20 points on 7-11 shooting. Freshman Joe Harris chipped in 18, but he missed several critical free throws late in the game. Sammy Zeglinski added 11 for the Hoos in the loss.

The Wahoos were only 9-22 from the charity-stripe. That’s not very often going to get it done on any level of basketball.

The Hurricanes were 17-22 from the free throw line, and shot only 39% from the field. Also, Miami was 9-23 from beyond the arch. The Hurricanes committed thirteen turnovers to Virginia’s eleven. Miami (14-9, 3-6) out-rebounded the undermanned Wahoos 41 to 29.

Miami was led by Adrian Thomas who made 6 three-pointers in a 20 point performance. Reggie Johnson scored 16, and Malcolm Grant added 11.

Virginia next returns to action (again in Florida) as they travel to Florida State on February 12 for a three p.m. tip.
