With a familiar strategy, Halsey Minor prevented his Williamsburg Carter’s Grove plantation from going on the auction block.
According to the Virginia Gazette, just as the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation was planning to foreclose on Minor for defaulting on a 2007 loan totaling $10.3 million loan, Minor’s Carter’s Grove, LLC filed for bankruptcy and kept the property from an auction sale. Minor previously filed for bankruptcy to consolidate all of the lawsuits concerning the Landmark Hotel.
In an essay published in the Gazette, Minor wrote that the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation failed to disclose the mansion’s condition, including a “4-foot hole in the wall on the second floor,” a result of a leak “Colonial Williamsburg patched and painted just prior to my purchase.” Minor also wrote that the foundation included a restriction on the property’s deed that prevented the plantation from hosting the public—a statement that was disputed by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.
