A couple of weeks ago I judged UVA Battle of the Bands, and presented the laurels to a group whose performance their was its first show. That band, the Anatomy of Frank, features Kyle Woolard of the Astronomers, who strips back the glam of his other band and replaces it with a banjo and some classic, sometimes soul-indebted arrangements. Listen to Anatomy of Frank’s undeniable "Saturday Morning" here. They play tonight at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar.
Who could forget that the Festival of the Book runs through the weekend? Check out our overview of this year’s events here; if you need more suggestions, head to the festival’s website. Also be sure to check out the unrelated Charlottesville Anarchist Bookfair at Random Row on Saturday. The festival is here, and anarchy here.
At least two plays run through the weekend that are worth seeing; The Memory of Water is at Live Arts, about three sisters who gather at their mother’s house when she dies, taking comfort in what they all have in common: hilarious bickering. Play On! has a lesser-known Tennessee Williams play, Summer and Smoke, which I review in this week’s paper. Live Arts is here, and Play On! here.
Over at the Southern, it’s a great weekend of local music, with the Kings of Belmont on Saturday night. Sunday night the venue hosts the Greg Howard UpTet, with John D’earth on trumpet, Darrell Rose on percussion, James McLaughlin on drums and Gina Sobel on flute and the titular Howard on the Chapman stick.
