Johns Hopkins (6-2) behind the superb play of goalie Pierce Basset upset the #2 Virginia Cavaliers lacrosse team 12-11 Saturday in Baltimore at historic Homewood Field.
Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the contest, but Virginia came back and even held the lead 11-10 late in the 4th quarter.
Virginia was led by Steele Stanwick with 3 goals. Adam Ghitelman saved 9 shots in goal for the Wahoos. Virginia outshot Hopkins 44-42, and also held the ground ball advantage 37-30.
“I never thought they stopped playing,” said UVA coach Dom Starsia. “I thought we had some good chances earlier that might have made the game closer. They are a good lacrosse team, and they have just been banged up a bit the past few weeks. We came into their place, on a nice day, in front of a good crowd, and I give them credit for playing well. We expected nothing less from them, and they deserve nothing but credit. I am proud of the way my team came back late in the game.”
Starsia’s Hoos are now 7-2 on the season with losses to Syracuse and now Hopkins.
Virginia returns to action Saturday as they play their first lax game inside Scott Stadium since the 1995 season. The Wahoos will play rival Maryland, and then Mike London’s football team will take the field for their annual Spring football game.Tickets for the lacrosse game will be $7 for adults and $5 for youth, seniors, and UVA faculty and staff for general admission seating. Spring game admittance will be free.
After Saturday’s Spring football game will we have a clearer understanding of who the quarterback will be next season? I sure hope that freshman David Watford from Hampton will be allowed to redshirt, and that Strauss or Rocco gets the chance under center for the Hoos.
