At a press conference in the former postal warehouse off of Airport Road, Governor Bob McDonnell announced today the addition of 51 jobs in Albemarle County thanks to the expansion of MicroAire Surgical Instruments. The company secured a $100,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist the county with MicroAire’s expansion.
MicroAire designs and manufactures medical and surgical instruments for procedures that range from carpal tunnel treatments to liposuction. The company, which moved to its Charlottesville location in 1995, plans to invest $8 million to expand operations connected to a new alternative to facial sutures.
George Saiz, president of MicroAire, said that the company has forged vital partnerships with the University of Virginia, the UVA Medical Center and, in particular, the UVA Department of plastic surgery.
“MicroAire is at a tipping point,” he said, and added that the company will invest “substantially” to transform the currently empty postal warehouse into a “beautiful” medical center.

“We’ve got to start making things again,” Governor McDonnell stressed during the announcement. He added that Virginia needed to “repatriate” businesses and jobs to the Commonwealth.
However, the Commonwealth is doing better than expected. Yesterday, McDonnell announced that tax collections for the month of March increased by 12.4 percent—the fifth consecutive month that revenue growth has increased by more than 9 percent.
“Virginia is back,” McDonnell told the audience. “We are on a roll.”
