Here comes another issue of ABODE, folks, packed with greenness. Here’s your May highlight reel:
As I mentioned last week, our feature story takes us inside the house of Bill and Nicole Sherman. It’s a dwelling that pushes the envelope on indoor/outdoor living, while proving that smart design (cross-ventilation; deep overhangs for shade) can do as much to cool a house in summer as central air. It’s also built from Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), upping its efficiency, and is outfitted with a rainwater collection system that’s not only practical, but beautiful.
Personally, the Shermans’ outdoor spaces, from porches to fruit trees, made me a bit green with envy. I know you’ll like getting a look inside.
Elsewhere in the issue, we’ve got a recipe for easy strawberry cake (so you’ll be ready to make the most of spring’s most charismatic fruit) and further discussion of dealing with invasive species on your land. (By the way, this Saturday is a big volunteer event, Invasive Plant Removal Day, meant to tackle Virginia’s statewide problem with species like ailanthus and English ivy. Check it out.)
Finally, there’s an update on the LEAP initiative, including its series of free green-home workshops and a rebate program for energy efficiency upgrades. Or, if replacing insulation isn’t in the cards for you this year, you can still green up your place by adding one or two air-cleaning houseplants from Better World Betty’s list.
