Fluvanna SPCA 5K
The Fluvanna SPCA will be holding its 2nd annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 14th at 7:30 a.m. at the Lake Monticello Golf Course in Palmyra. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers overall and per age group. Cost is $15 for age 15 and under, $20 for age 16 and over before March 30, and $25 for age 16 and over after March 30.
Registration by March 30 guarantees t-shirt and goodie bag. All proceeds will support the FSPCA’s life-saving mission to rescue homeless pets and place them in good, loving homes.

Public Forum on Mental Health
The Community Mental Health and Wellness Coalition is holding its second public forum about the state of mental health care in our community on March 27 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at The Haven, 112 West Market Street in Charlottesville. PCA Update on Arts & Economic Impact Study
Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) announces the completion of data collection for Arts & Economic Prosperity IV (AEPIV), the most comprehensive study of the economic impact of the arts ever undertaken in the Charlottesville area. The research study, conducted by Americans for the Arts (AFTA), evaluates the impact that spending by arts organizations and their audiences have on their local economies, with a special focus on the nonprofit sector.
As one of 200 study partners across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, PCA facilitated the gathering of detailed economic and event attendance data from arts and culture organizations located in Charlottesville and Albemarle throughout 2011, including:
- Over 2,000 Audience Expenditure Surveys from area cultural events— more than twice the minimum number needed for our population size
- Organizational Expenditure Surveys from 41 of our area’s eligible organizations, representing approximately $50 million in aggregate operating expenditures
Scheduled for public presentation by PCA this summer, AEPIV will report on the impact of spending by area arts and culture organizations and their audiences on the economy. Results will include:
- The total dollars spent by Charlottesville and Albemarle’s nonprofit arts and culture organizations and select commercial arts venues
- The total dollars spent by â¨audiences as a direct result of their attendance at arts and culture events in Charlottesville and Albemarle
- The number of full-time â¨equivalent jobs supported by arts spending
- The amount of local and state government tax revenues generated by arts spending
- The amount of resident, household income generated by arts spending
According to Arts & Economic Prosperity III, the national nonprofit arts industry generated 5.7 million jobs and $166.2 billion in total economic activity during 2005, resulting in $29.6 billion in federal, state and local government revenues. Tom Tom Founders Festival
Charlottesville’s new creative festival, the Tom Tom Founders Festival, will celebrate original music, art and innovation for one month, starting on Founders Day, April 13, Thomas Jefferson’s birthday.
During the festival’s “City As Canvas” month from April 13 to May 13, residencies, talks, workshops, and performances for artists and entrepreneurs will offer an open stage highlighting local innovation and creativity throughout the community. Most of these events will be free.
Tom Tom’s activity culminates in the main festival weekend, May 11-13; featuring performances from over 50 bands in venues along the Downtown Mall; the unveiling of new sculpture, paintings, photography, murals and interactive art by featured TTFF artists; and keynote presentations that showcase Charlottesville as an innovation hub for the local food movement, biotechnology, financial services and other start-up technologies. Some events will be free. The headlining musical events will be ticketed, and weekend passes will be sold.
“We have 25 bands from across the country, mostly buzz-bands in the indie-pop, indie-folk, and electronic genres,” said Paul Beyer, the festival’s director. “They will be joined by more than 25 of our best local bands that are excited to be part of this new festival.”
The festival’s line-up and headliners will be announced in the second half of March, and tickets will go on sale then.
At the Tom Tom Founders Festival launch on Thursday, at the festival’s new headquarters on South 1st Street, Beyer will announce the festival’s three main music stages, and the two gala events – both free – that will bookend the festival, on April 13 and May 13.

Spring Concert at Montpelier
Enjoy an afternoon concert, “Songs to Bid Friends Welcome,” in the Grand Salon of the Visitor Center for James Madison’s Montpelier and William duPont Gallery on Sunday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m.
Premier Metropolitan Opera singer Ron Hedlund performs with Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winning musician Barbara Hedlund. They will be accompanied by pianist Cara Lynn Chowning. The concert will feature songs, salon tunes, chamber music, opera, and beloved melodies from Broadway and the Great American Songbook.
The concert is sponsored by The James Madison Museum and James Madison’s Montpelier. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members. A reception will follow the concert. Seating is limited.
