Green happenings: Charlottesville environmental news and events

Rock show: On Saturday, September 15, join geologist and author Dr. Robert Badger to learn about the rock formations along the ridgetops of Shenandoah National Park. The program starts at 1pm in the Byrd Visitor Center at milepost 51 on the Skyline Drive.

Get a bucket: Learn how to harvest rainwater in your own backyard at a rain barrel workshop from 9-10am Saturday, September 22 at 168 Spotnap Rd. The event is free, but you can buy a quality barrel for $75 (county and city are offering a $30 rebate) by visiting www.rainbarrelsintl.com before the workshop.

Radioactive: In Virginia Beach last week, the first public meeting of a working group convened by Governor Bob McDonnell to address the possible lifting of a moratorium on Virginia uranium mining drew a crowd concerned about mining’s possible negative health and environmental affects. The working group will eventually create draft regulations for review by the General Assembly. Before that, though, it will hold two more meetings: one in Chatham in October and another in Richmond in November.
