Green happenings: Charlottesville environmental news and events

Each week, C-VILLE’s Green Scene page takes a look at local environmental news. The section’s bulletin board has information on local green events and keeps you up to date on statewide happenings. Got an event or a tip you’d like to see here and in the paper? Write us at news@c-ville.com.

Holly jolly trails: Join the Sierra Club’s Piedmont group for its annual holiday hike Saturday, December 8 at 9:30am. The group will meet in front of the Barracks Road Panera Bread, and then take an easy hour-long walk along the Rivanna Trail. After the hike, warm up with friends with lunch at Panera.

Bypass roadblocks: Local organizations have been speaking out against the proposed Western Bypass of Route 29 for years, and now the Environmental Protection Agency is weighing in. The EPA requires that the Virginia Department of Transportation conduct an environmental assessment, and has recommended that VDOT consider other alternatives to ensure that the project is in compliance with federal law.

Plant party: The Virginia Native Plant Society meets at 7:30pm Wednesday, December 12 at the Ivy Creek Foundation’s Education Center to celebrate the publication of the Flora of Virginia. The new book’s principal illustrator, Lara Gastinger, lives in Charlottesville. The event is free and open to the public.
