Green happenings: Charlottesville environmental news and events

Each week, C-VILLE’s Green Scene page takes a look at local environmental news. The section’s bulletin board has information on local green events and keeps you up to date on statewide happenings. Got an event or a tip you’d like to see here and in the paper? Write us at news@c-ville.com.

Road ride: National Bike Month may be over, but local biking activities are still going strong. On Saturday, June 8, join your fellow cyclists and Bike Charlottesville for a 44-mile social ride. Meet at 629 Berkmar Circle at 10am, and don’t forget your helmet and water bottle. Shorter routes will also be available for those interested.

Trail tune-up: Did you miss the volunteer workday last week at the Ragged Mountain Reservoir? Make up for it by joining other outdoor lovers this Saturday for some maintenance work on the Rivanna Trail. Meet at the Rivanna Trail Foundation Tool Shed at 2030 Morton Dr. at 8:45am, and expect to work hard for about three hours. Be sure to wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty, and bring water.

Mining movement: The Piedmont Environmental Council is keeping close tabs on the status of a hot button item throughout rural Virginia. The General Assembly withdrew a bill in January that would have lifted the decades-long ban on uranium mining, and according to the PEC, mining backers are pressuring Governor Bob McDonnell to reconsider allowing mining and milling. The PEC is encouraging anyone who’s opposed to uranium mining to send a letter to the Governor before he leaves office.
