UPDATE, 3:30pm Monday, June 10: State police have confirmed that the man killed in an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning in western Albemarle was Gregory A. Rosson, Jr., 21, of Crozet.
According to the latest news release issued this afternoon, police received a 911 call for a “domestic situation” at an Afton address on Route 250 at 2:16am. When the county officer who responded arrived on the scene, he saw a female being assaulted outside the home, according to police. Rosson then ran towards the officer, the release said, and the officer fired his weapon. Rosson died at the scene, and his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for an autopsy.
A special police-involved shooting investigative team based out of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomatix Field Office was called in by the Albemarle County Police Department to investigate the incident. County police are conducting their own internal administrative review.
The officer involved has not yet been identified.

One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Albemarle County early Saturday morning, the second shooting involving county cops in two weeks and the third police-involved shooting in the area this spring.
Police were called to a house in the 9000 block of Rockfish Gap Turnpike—a stretch of Route 250 between Crozet and Afton—for a “domestic situation” in the early hours of the morning, according to a press release from the Virginia State Police, who were called in by the Albemarle County Police Department to assist in the investigation.
During the call, which other news reports say took place around 2:30am, an unidentified officer shot and killed a man, according to the release. County police spokeswoman Carter Johnson said in a separate release that the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave—standard operating procedure in police-involved shootings. The officer was not injured, state police said.
According to NBC29, family members told reporters the man shot and killed was Greg Rosson. A Facebook profile for a Greg Rosson with a Jarman’s Gap Road address includes posts from friends mourning him.
