Happy hour: Looking for new gardening tips or conservation ideas? Want to get out of the house and meet folks who care about the same things you do? Check out Green Drinks, Transition Charlottesville’s monthly social gathering for anyone who’s interested in being green. The event begins at 6pm at Brookville Restaurant on Thursday, June 13.
Walk ‘n talk: Join your fellow nature lovers for an educational nature walk before it gets too hot outside. Local native plant enthusiast Phil Stokes will lead this month’s native plant walk at the Ivy Creek Natural Area, pointing out flowering plants along the field edges like root orchid, milkweed, and skullcaps. The event is free for all ages, and begins at 9am on Saturday, June 15. Meet by the kiosk near the parking lot.
Uncommon classroom: Inspired by outdoor educational programs in Europe, Ruth Haske is launching Ivy Forest School, a preschool for children ages 2-5. Students will explore the outdoors every day, rain or shine, but each morning will start out with quiet time indoors—hopefully, in a cozy yurt. Haske’s short-term goal is to raise $12,000 to build a platform quilted yurt, which will house mats for napping and basic, natural toys like wooden blocks and silk pieces, and an open space for indoor quiet time, and the Kickstarter campaign only has a few days left.
