Green happenings: Charlottesville environmental news and events

Each week, C-VILLE’s Green Scene page takes a look at local environmental news. The section’s bulletin board has information on local green events and keeps you up to date on statewide happenings. Got an event or a tip you’d like to see here and in the paper? Write us at news@c-ville.com.

Fall foods and fruits: The leaves are starting to change, and so are the fruits! Join Mary Lee Epps and Tana Herndon on Saturday, September 21, for a nature hike through the Ivy Creek Natural Area and a hands-on discussion about the wild fruits and foods that come with late summer and early fall. Meet by the kiosk next to the parking lot at 9am.

Coastal power: After a six-month bidding process, Dominion Virginia Power was the top bidder on nearly 113,000 acres of land 27 miles off the Commonwealth’s coast. According to national reports, Dominion barely beat out Charlottesville-based company Apex Clean Energy, and plans to construct an offshore wind farm on the property. Dominion is in the process of developing six-megawatt pilot turbines, and expects to have the turbines up and running by 2017.

Kitchen coaching: This week is your last chance to catch one of the Piedmont Environmental Council’s seminars on restoring the local food system. At 6:30pm on Thursday, September 19, meet at Rebecca’s Natural Food for a discussion on regulations of commercial food products, services through the nonprofit Virginia Food Works, and processing possibilities for your own food.
