Her mother’s daughter: Interior design is in Heidi Brooks’ blood

We asked interior designer Heidi Brooks to tell us a few things about herself and her design philosophy. Here’s what she had to say.

Antique or modern? Antique.

City or country? City.

Which colors do you use most? White, black, various hues of gray and beige.

Which materials or textures do you frequently use? Linen and leather.

What is your favorite interior design-related word? Casual-elegant; form and function.

Does your home look like the one you grew up in? Yes, my mother is an interior designer and I have been molded by her aesthetic.

Does a room need a view? Not necessarily. If it has good bone structure and is executed well, it can stand alone without a view.

Favorite designer or architect? It’s very hard to select just one. Darryl Carter No. 1 and Michael Smith No. 2 as designers, and Bobby McAlpine No. 1 and Peter Pennoyer No. 2 as architects.

Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine do you peruse religiously? Veranda and Architectural Digest magazines.

Design-wise, what should a homeowner never scrimp on? A well-designed kitchen and master bathroom.

Design rule you like to break? Hanging pictures at eye level.

What is your favorite room in the house? My dining room.

What is your most treasured possession? My husband and my dog.

What do you wish you could do without? My husband’s large speakers in the family room, not to mention the small ones in the dining room!

What are you afraid to DIY? Paint.

Have you ever had a change of heart about an object or a style? Absolutely! There are so many handsome objects and styles to choose from, and I am such a stickler for blending aesthetically the perfect combination of objects and styles (also paying special attention to scale and proportion), that I think I drive myself crazy.

If you could live in a historical figure’s house, whose would it be? Jefferson’s Monticello.

On what movie set would you like to live? Something’s Gotta Give

If you were reborn as a piece of furniture or an object, what would it be? I am so enamored with columns. I would like to be reborn as a Corinthian column that had once been part of a beautiful southern estate in Charleston, South Carolina.

What is your first design memory? Watching my mother create our beautiful home in Portland, Maine.
