UVA med school dean to step down this fall

UVA School of Medicine Dean Nancy Dunlap announced yesterday that she will step down at the end of her term in November.

Dunlap, who joined the staff in May 2013, arrived at UVA to serve as dean on an interim basis, replacing Dr. Steven DeKosky, a longtime UVA neurologist who held the position from 2007 until 2013.

According to the UVA Health Systems website, Dunlap came to UVA at the start of her term in order “to guide the School of Medicine through a critical transition during the search and appointment of an executive vice president for health affairs.” An MD, researcher and business administrator, Dunlap was a physician in residence with the National Governors Association before coming to UVA.

In a story on University news site UVAToday, health affairs executive vice president Dr. Richard P. Shannon praised Dunlap’s leadership in a time of transition. “Her outstanding service to the school merits our gratitude and admiration,” he said.

R. Edward Howell, Vice President and CEO of UVA Medical Center, announced his resignation a year ago. His successor, former Duke University Hospital senior VP Pamela Sutton-Wallace, took over in July.

According to Shannon, UVA’s executive vice president for health affairs and John D. Simon, UVA’s executive vice president and provost, are leading the search for a permanent medical school dean.—Nicolette Gendron
