Mascot unmasked

Three students who graduated from the University of Virginia last weekend additionally gave up their coveted positions as Cav Man, the University’s official game day mascot.

Though the students who assume the Cav Man role are anonymous, Sam Meredith, class of 2015, revealed his identity as one of the masked men. In an interview with NBC29, Meredith, who served as mascot since August 2012 and wore the Cav Man cape under his gown at last weekend’s graduation ceremony, said it was fun to see the surprised reactions of his peers upon learning of his confidential role.

According to UVAToday, five students act as Cav Man throughout the school year. Three students usually share the responsibility of performing as Cav Man in a single game.

The search will be on in the spring for new performers. Virginia athletics Spirit Coordinator Kelley Haney will oversee the tryouts, and be looking for mascots with the strength to tote the UVA flag and the talent to dance and perform skits.—
