Republican challenges Lunsford for Albemarle prosecutor job

A former federal prosecutor has filed to run as a Republican in the Albemarle race for commonwealth’s attorney against two-term incumbent Denise Lunsford, the Democratic nominee.

Robert Tracci, 43, served as a special assistant U.S. attorney for the Department of Justice in Charlottesville. He worked as a deputy assistant attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, and prior to that he worked as counsel, then chief legislative counsel and parliamentarian to the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary.

Tracci, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Illinois College of Law, has lived in Virginia since his graduation. He took care of his child while his wife, a surgeon and professor at UVA, completed her residency, and most recently he’s worked for the UVA Health System.

County Republicans will pick their nominees at a June 1 mass meeting.

Correction 5/28/15: Tracci has lived in Virginia since his graduation, not Charlottesville as originally reported.
