“We wanted something that evoked an earlier period, but we liked clean lines,” says Tom Becherer of his second home, a light-filled space. He and his wife, Jenny, hired Robert Gurney, a D.C.-based architect whose design they’d seen in a magazine. “I want my whole house to look like that,” Tom remembers saying.

This month’s featured landscape:
When siting the pool, landscape architect Jill Trischman-Marks wanted to preserve the gum tree near the back deck. "We've always loved it; it's so gnarly," says homeowner Chris Menke. The solution was to install retaining walls above the pool, then layered plantings above the wall. Photo: Virginia Hamrick

It took nearly 20 years for city homeowners Chris and Greg Menke to install the pool they’d been planning on since buying the house in 1982. They hired landscape architect Jill Trischman-Marks, whose main goal was to preserve the house’s visual relationship with the trees. “I didn’t want to stop the eye at the pool,” she says.
