Turner found guilty in Al Hamraa slaying

A Charlottesville jury convicted Taneak Turner, 20, of voluntary manslaughter January 15 after deliberating for nearly 11 hours, and recommended he serve 25 years in prison for that and other charges related to the death of Antonio Washington.

Washington, 30, was fatally stabbed May 10, 2014, at his birthday party at Al Hamraa restaurant in the Ix building. Turner was charged with first-degree murder, three counts of attempted malicious wounding for firing into an occupied car right after the stabbing and three counts for use of a firearm. He’ll be sentenced April 19.

Turner is the third person convicted in killings stemming from Washington’s death. Washington’s best friend, Avery Fernando Gray, 39, was found guilty of second-degree murder last May in what the prosecution called a revenge killing for shooting Turner’s uncle, Oscar Brown. Gray was sentenced to 39 years in prison.

Turner’s friend, Antwan Terrell Roberts, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and being an accessory after the fact in a plea deal last summer that included testifying against Turner. Roberts has not been sentenced.
