Planning Commission opposes Meadowcreek Parkway funding

The city Planning Commission has recommended that the city yank funding for its portion of the road, according to Charlottesville Tomorrow.

Come on: You didn’t honestly think that the fat lady had sung on the Meadowcreek Parkway, did you? Yeah, it’s true that bids have come in for the county portion of the two-mile lightning rod—er, road. But the city Planning Commission has recommended yanking funding for the city’s portion of the road, according to Charlottesville Tomorrow.

At its December 9 meeting, the Commission voted 3-2 to recommend pulling the $450,000 in the capital improvement plan for McIntire Extended (the official name of the city’s portion of the MCP) and instead put the money toward parkland acquisition and sidewalks. Cheri Lewis and Michael Osteen opposed.

Jim Tolbert, director of city’s Neighborhood Development Services, warned that the decision could jeopardize state funding, and could leave the community with a road that only goes from Rio to Melbourne roads.

City Council is likely to overrule the Planning Commission—though, with this project, you might want to hedge your bets.
