UVA basketball coach Dave Leitao resigns

It has been a tough year for UVA men’s basketball, and what follows may not come as a surprise.

It has been a tough year for UVA men’s basketball, and what follows may not come as a surprise. Cavalier coach Dave Leitao has resigned. The Sabre reports that UVA Athletics Director Craig Littlepage announced the resignation of Leitao effective immediately.

"I appreciate his hard work and dedication to athletics at the University of Virginia,” he said in a news release.

Leitao began coaching the Cavaliers in 2005. He leaves after four years with a 63-60 record. Leitao will be paid approximately $2.1 million, per reached agreement.

According to the news release, a national search to replace Leitao has already begun.

“Our intention is to hire the very best person to lead the University’s basketball program consistent with our overall department goals,” said Littlepage. “Our team has a promising nucleus of young players who we expect will continue to develop.”

Last week, freshman guard Sylven Landesberg was named 2009 ACC Rockie of the Year.
