Hoos Lax Holds Off Heels 11-10 in OT

It was a nail-biter Saturday at Klockner Stadium as UVA held off the Heels on Steele Stanwick’s late OT goal. The win ended their two-game losing streak. Up next, the Blue Devils in Durham

The Virginia lacrosse team ended their two-game losing streak Saturday by holding off the North Carolina Tar Heels in overtime 11-10. Both teams started the contest slowly only scoring 1 goal a piece in the first quarter, but in the second period UVA scored 4 goals on fifteen shots to open their lead to 5-3.

It was Carolina that played the more aggressive lacrosse in the third quarter as the Heels scored 3 goals on 16 shots. The Hoos added 2 goals on just seven shots in the period.

In the fourth quarter, the Heels got the better of the Wahoos as they scored 4 goals to tie things up and force the overtime session.

In the extra period, North Carolina had several chances to grab the win, but Steele Stanwick won the game for Dom Starsia’s Hoos as he beat Carolina’s goalie Steven Rastivo with just forty six seconds to play in OT.

Virginia’s Adam Ghitelman was credited with fifteen saves, as Carolina’s goalie Rastivo made eight saves.

Carolina (7-4) outshot Virginia 42-38, and the Heels were 1-1 in extra man opportunities. Virginia was 1-2 in the extra man action. UVA won the faceoff battle 12-11.

Colin Briggs scored 3 goals and made 2 assists for the Hoos, as Rhamel Bratton, Chris Bocklet, and Steele Stanwick all scored twice for Virginia. Shamel Bratton, who returned this week from his second suspension of the season, scored 1 goal on 6 shots.

The Cavaliers (8-3) return to action Saturday as they travel to Durham to face bitter rival Duke at Noon.
