The Virginia Quarterly Review has done it again. Just as in recent years, they’ve garnered nominations for the American Society of Magazine Editors’ National Magazine Awards, often referred to as the Pulitzers of the magazine world. The three categories under which VQR will be vying for a win with the likes of Gourmet, Print and The Georgia Review are: General Excellence (circulation under 100,000); Single-Topic Issue for its Fall issue “South America in the Twenty-First Century“; Photojournalism for Chris Hondros’s photo essay “A Window on Baghdad.“ “It’s remarkable what we’ve been able to accomplish given our modest size and financial resources,” Editor Ted Genoways says on the VQR website. “We have an annual budget that’s smaller than what Vanity Fair spends on their Oscar party and a staff of only five people, but we’ve been able to put out a magazine that is consistently among the best in the country.” The winners will be announced May 1 in New York City.

Ted Genoways says that with their budget, VQR won’t be throwing an Oscar-size party anytime soon, but it’s enough to put together a “Pulitzer”-nominated magazine.
