A young boy and his beloved horse Joey are plucked from tranquil farm life in Devon and thrust into the depraved and violent landscape of World War I. Such is the tale of War Horse, adapted for the stage from the book by Michael Morpurgo, and broadcast live from the National Theatre in London. In addition to award-winning lighting and set design, the play is known for its astonishing life-size horses created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. As the steel and leather steeds gallop, breathe, toil in the trenches, and charge with the cavalry, they represent a humanity that both German and British soldiers rediscover as they work together to save the life of the war horse.
