Mistrial declared in Kevin Quick murder trial

Just days into a six-week trial, U.S. District Court Judge Glen Conrad declared a mistrial May 12 for four of the six defendants in the gang-related murder of Waynesboro Police Reserve Captain Kevin Quick after one of the defendants obtained a copy of the jury list.

An FBI agent told the judge at least two copies were circulated that included personal information of more than 100 prospective and impaneled jurors, including number of children, addresses, dates of birth and spouses occupations, the Daily Progress reported. For 15 hours, the list was in possession of an unnamed defendant, who contacted a relative.

All six defendants are members of the Central Virginia chapter of the Bloods called the 99 Goon Syndikate, and are charged under RICO statutes.

Lawyers for siblings Mersaides and Shantai Shelton, who are charged in Quick’s kidnapping and murder, and for Anthony Darnell Stokes and Halisi Uhuru, who are charged with racketeering, drug distribution and obstruction of justice, requested the mistrial.

Attorneys for two of the defendants—Daniel Lamont Mathis and Kweli Uhuru—who face murder and kidnapping charges, did not request a mistrial, and it had not been determined at press time whether their trial would continue.

Defense attorney David Heilberg, who is not associated with the case, said he was in the courtroom last Thursday, and heard from legal sources the jury list situation was the government’s mistake.

Quick disappeared the evening of January 31, 2014, after leaving his mother’s Afton Mountain home. He never arrived at this girlfriend’s Turtle Creek apartment in Charlottesville, and his body was discovered a week later in Goochland County.
