The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) and the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) announce a significant new resource for the community: an online nonprofit directory. Through the Nonprofit Directory, community members now have a one-stop-shop for current information on the mission, programs, and funding needs of the diverse array of nonprofits that are the backbone of our community.  This Directory enables ever-changing nonprofits to provide current information instantly to the community and offers donors an easy-to-use tool to perform due diligence, explore organizations in a particular field of interest and learn about real-time funding needs.

 

“CNE is excited to partner with CACF to provide a community resource that highlights the critical and varied work of the local nonprofit sector,” said Cristine Nardi, Executive Director, CNE. “Nonprofits are a social safety net, enrich us via arts, education and culture and are an economic engine in our community.  We hope the directory will help community members better understand and engage with area nonprofits.”

Through the directory nonprofit organizations are able to update their directory profiles to keep their programs and needs current for the community. Participation is free to nonprofit organizations and the information provided is accessible on both the CACF and CNE websites. Additionally, nonprofits will find the directory a useful tool to learn about the work of other organizations to facilitate collaboration and partnerships.

If you are a nonprofit and would like to have your organization listed or update your profile, contact CNE and they will help you through the simple registration process.

 

Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) presents a summer series of episodes by Art21, the preeminent chronicler of contemporary art and artists through its biennial television series for PBS. Once a month in June, July, and August, PCA will screen a different episode followed by discussion. All three screenings are FREE and open to the public and will be held at CitySpace, 100 5th Street NE on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.

 

How do artists respond to a world in flux? In what ways do artists act as agents of change, and what kinds of aesthetic choices do they make to express it? This film examines artists who bear witness, through their work, to transformation – cultural, material, and aesthetic – and actively engage communities as collaborators and subjects. Featuring Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui, and Catherine Opie. 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.

 

Who and what limits our freedom of expression? In what ways do cultural differences affect our understanding of art and other forms of communication? How do an artist’s process and choice of medium affect our perception of his or her work? This episode features artists who synthesize disparate aesthetic traditions, present taboo subject matter, discover innovative uses of media, and explore the shape-shifting potential of the human figure. Featuring David Altmejd, Lynda Benglis, and Tabaimo. 12:00 p.m. -2:00 p.m.

 

In what ways can art convey equilibrium or disequilibrium? What is reality? How do artists perceive and express it? This episode features artists whose works explore the distinctions between balance and imbalance, and demonstrate that the smallest change in a line, a formal element, or a structure can be a radical proposition. Featuring Rackstraw Downes, Robert Mangold, and Sarah Sze. 12:00 p.m. -2:00 p.m.

The Missoula Children’s Theater (MCT) will present two favorite children’s fairy tale performances. “The Frog Prince” will take place on Saturday, June 23 and “Hansel and Gretel” on Saturday, June 30 with performances at 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. These performances will feature more than 60 local students (grades 1-12). 

 

MCT has been touring for more than 30 years and annually visits nearly 1,200 communities in all 50 states, 4 Canadian Provinces and overseas. Its mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.

Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) is proud to co-present Law & The Arts, an ongoing series of seminars with the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, navigating the legal processes for arts-related issues. The seminar will take place on Monday, June 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at CitySpace, 100 5th Street NE (on the Downtown Mall) in Charlottesille.

 

This will be a helpful presentation wherein John Henneberger, President of Educational Media Creations Company, LLC and Justin Laughter, Esq. (a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) will walk through the business and legal aspects of being a creative in the digital age. The speakers will share both legal and practical strategies for protecting, enforcing and avoiding infringing intellectual property on and via the Internet.

 

The cost for the seminar is $5 for PCA members and $10 for Non-Members. Pizza and beverages will be provided for all attendees.

The City of Charlottesville, in partnership with the with the Charlottesville Municipal Band and the Orange Community Band, is proud to host the second annual Charlottesville Community Band Festival.  

 

Expanded from last year’s festival, this family-friendly Celebrate! 250 event will feature 700 musicians and twelve bands from across the Commonwealth onstage at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion (700 East Main Street, at the east end of the Downtown Mall, with an additional five ensembles providing musical entertainment at Central Place (110 2nd Street NE).

 

FREE and open to the public, the Festival will be held on Saturday, June 30 from 9:15 am to 10:00 pm.  

 

The bands will perform a wide range of musical styles, from movie themes and Broadway, to pop and jazz tunes, to patriotic and Americana selections. 

 

The community is invited to bring picnic lunches or refreshments (non-alcoholic beverages only) and spend the day on the Pavilion lawn or at tables underneath the canopy.  Cooling fans will be provided for additional comfort.

The Virginia Institute of Autism (VIA) is pleased to announce that Emily Callahan, PhD, BCBA-D has joined the VIA team as the new Director of Outpatient Behavioral Services.  She will oversee the Outpatient Behavioral Services program, a re-structured approach to providing clinical supports to children with autism and their families and educators in their own environments.  These program changes will allow VIA to further expand outpatient services available to people dealing with autism.

 

Trained in clinical psychology as well as behavior analysis, Dr. Callahan has worked in some of the premier autism treatment centers in the country, and she is recognized as one of the up-and-coming leaders in the field of evidence-based autism treatment.  “Emily brings a wealth of creativity and experience to VIA’s community-based programming, and we expect she will help build new and stronger partnerships between VIA and local families, health care providers and educators,” says VIA Executive Director Ethan Long.
