Since he was charged with possession of alcohol in July, UVA quarterback Peter Lalich has had to avoid two different pass rushes, and in the media blitz he faced yesterday, Head Coach Al Groh took the place of the offensive line to protect the college sophomore.
At a press conference yesterday, Lalich proclaimed he didn’t do drugs or use alcohol during his probation period, The Daily Progress reports this morning. Lalich’s statement contradicts a report Friday in the Progress that detailed that Lalich failed to provide a sample for a drug test and voluntarily admitted to using marijuana and alcohol while on probation. Those court documents have since been sealed.
Groh said in the press conference that the media was "piling on" the quarterback. "There’s some reporting on this young man that probably would fall under the category of ‘tabloid’ reporting," Groh said, according to the Roanoke Times.
After the win against Richmond on Saturday, Groh told the media, "We’re here to talk about football. It’s unfortunate that some people have chosen to misrepresent the player without having all of the facts. Those people should examine themselves."
Lalich is set to appear in Charlottesville General District Court on September 26, the day before the football team faces Duke on the road.
