New poll shows Perriello closing gap with Goode

A new poll by SurveyUSA shows that Tom Perriello has made significant progress in the past two months, closing the gap by 21 points on Virgil Goode in the race for the Fifth District.

The poll, conducted October 6 and 7 of 680 likely voters, shows Goode with a 13-point advantage, 55 percent to 42 percent. In August, SurveyUSA polling showed Goode leading the race 64 percent to 30 percent.

Perriello’s communications director, Jessica Barba, says that Perriello is “on the path to victory.”

“The reason we are gaining support is because Tom Perriello is offering real solutions on the economy, gas prices, and health care, when all we’ve seen from Congressman Goode is lies, false attacks, and ducking debates,” said Barba in a press release.

Data on the subgroups reveals few surprises. Goode had a 17-point lead with male voters and a 22-point lead with those 65 and older. Perriello is beating Goode with young voters (those ages 18-34) by 6 points and leads with African-American voters by 57 points.
