March First Fridays Guide

Local artist Eliza Evans has been painting acrylic portraits from real-life scenes since 2006, and she always tries to capture a good likeness as quickly as possible so the subject doesn’t get uncomfortable sitting. Her latest exhibit is a collection of self-portraits along with some portraits of her close friends and family on canvas, wood and dipper gourds that she grew. “There is something a little different about painting myself from the mirror,” says Evans in her artist statement. “I feel like I can loosen up and do more experimenting with my painting technique.” Evans hopes that even though the exhibit displays her face over and over, people will understand she doesn’t take herself too seriously.
Her #selfies exhibit opens on March 5 at The Garage.

First Fridays is a monthly art event featuring exhibit openings at many Downtown art galleries and additional exhibition venues. Several spaces offer receptions. Listings are compiled in collaboration with Piedmont Council for the Arts. To list an exhibit, please send information two weeks before opening to arts@c-ville.com.

January First Fridays Guide

Local artist Aaron Eichorst believes in the power of a positive perspective on influencing personal success. His exhibition, “Inner Outlook,” is an artistic manifestation of his personal attitudes and temperaments over four years, and follows a previous series that featured a style called grotesque—an intricate incorporation of fantastic human and animal figures interlaced with architectural frameworks. “The imagery that I use in the pieces are all things that inspire me: people, animals, plants, art and architectural history,” Eichorst says. The nomenclature of his works further reflects this inspiration with the name “grottesques,” a term derived from his artistic style and “grottoes,” the underground chambers of ancient Roman palaces. See Eichorst’s acrylic and tempera paintings in the Chroma Projects Gallery through January.

December First Fridays Guide

Sculptor and painter Aggie Zed sees all of the beauty and strangeness in her imaginative ceramic and copper works as alive. Her complex elephant creations often feature elements of low-tech industry like wheeled carts that intricately express the physicality of the pachyderms. Zed names wings, particularly “clumsy, comic, metal wings,” as a part of her visual vocabulary. “Something about the size and weight…makes an elephant outfitted with wings especially poignant,” she says. “Despite its strength, [an elephant] cannot escape its complications with humans.” Glimpse some of Zed’s fantastical works at Chroma Gallery @ SCS through December 26.

In her non-traditional photography, local artist Cary Oliva manipulates instant film (namely Polaroid) formats to create phantom-like images with textural imperfections and light flares, reminiscent of watercolors. Oliva enjoys working with early art forms and returns to the motif of age often: “I feel like an old soul in general,” she says. “I’d rather buy something old and upcycle it or do something that appreciates the value of what it used to be.” Oliva’s show, “Old is New,” is at Spring Street Boutique through November.

West maintains that it is the act of painting that is important, and says she enjoys the feeling of being connected to her environment and herself as well as her creation.

August First Fridays Guide

Much of Charlottesville resident Stephen Kern’s new exhibition at SCS gallery, titled “Where Light Comes From,” is derived from the young artist’s submission portfolio that gained him entry to VCU Arts for the upcoming fall semester. The works are imaginative scenarios illustrative of curious fantasies, often illuminated with dangling lamps that pierce Kern’s nocturnes with concentrations of light. Kern’s inspiration comes from nature, from dreams, sometimes out of thin air and often from his particular love of tree forms and lanterns. His imagery is essentially experimental, with each painting revealing something unexpected to Kern at every turn.

July First Fridays Guide

Local poet Judy Longley often feels like she’s drowning in words. After years of letting her poetry consume her, she’s learning how to revel in silence with a new skill set and a new name. Working as Juliet Da Luiso, Longley unleashes her joy and curiosity in highly abstract oil paintings rather than verses or stanzas. She describes her work as an “inner sea of intense color splashing like waves upon the shores of reality.” You can get a feel for her kinetic relationship to brush and canvas at Milli Joe through the end of July.

June First Fridays Guide

Richard Freeman is one of Virginia’s little-known art institutions. His frame shop sat stalwartly on the Corner for most of the last century, after opening under print-loving Paul Victorius’ ownership in the late 1930s. When the ’60s rolled around, Victorius took notice of Freeman, a former naval officer running a small art gallery in the Carytown area of Richmond, and the pair’s partnership flourished. Now, Freeman-Victorius is a family business with new digs on West Main Street, and it finally has room to showcase Freeman’s own work—a set of richly saturated acrylic paintings with the occasional collage thrown in.
