Best general practitioner 2013: Albemarle Center for Family Medicine

Albemarle Center for Family Medicine

535 Westfield Rd.
973-4040
albemarlecenter.com

Runner-up:
Downtown Family Healthcare
310 Avon St. #9
917-1818

When Gene Kelly performed his famous scene in Singin’ in the Rain, in which he, y’know, sings in the rain, he was reportedly running a 103-degree fever. Still, he powered through, creating one of the most memorable movie moments in cinematic history. But, imagine what he could have accomplished had he not been ill. If only the docs at Albemarle Center for Family Medicine—again this year’s pick for best GP—had treated him, he might have been in much better shape to accomplish such a task. Downtown Family Healthcare heats up second place from its new location on Garrett Street.

Runner-up:
Keswick Hall
701 Club Dr., Keswick
979-3440
keswick.com

Go big or, quite literally, go home—that’s what readers say, which is why they chose two of the area’s swankiest spots for overnight stays this year. The winner is a luxury facility that doubles as the official hotel of the University of Virginia and includes a golf course, spa, sports club, and special occasion options—not to mention a bangin’ Sunday brunch in the Old Mill Room. In the runner-up spot, Keswick Hall, which earlier this year embarked upon a full-scale golf course renovation headed up by legendary course architect Pete Dye. Talk about upping the ante.

Best hairstylist 2013: Claibourne Reppert

Claibourne Reppert at The Honeycomb

310 E. Market St.
977-0616
facebook.com/pages/The-Honeycomb

Runner-up:
Jonathan Nuckles
104 14th St. NW
227-2277
nucklessalon.com

In a C-VILLE interview with Claibourne earlier this year, her brother-in-law, who was sitting in on the conversation, said this of her hair salon: “You can read People or you can look at some cool art.” That’s because Claibourne’s salon, The Honeycomb, isn’t just a salon. It’s also an art gallery, showcasing the kind of art that draws the kind of clientele she’s seeking. “There’s a nice crossover,” she told us. Jonathan Nuckles, who recently celebrated 10 years in the Charlottesville style scene, flattens the competition again this year and earns himself the runner-up spot.

What’s Claibourne passionate about in Charlottesville?

1. Old Love: Herb Mayonnaise from Bellair Market
2. The bridge when coming from 250 out to Ivy in front of the intersection of Ivy road and Bellair. It always had the best/worst graffiti on it.
3. New Love: Peppers at Citizen Burger Bar
4. How upset the city of Charlottesville is about the ‘bums’
5. The Charlottesville’s Flower Man sign on Cherry Avenue. The sign is gone now but might have to become my next tattoo… I loved him.

924-0311
virginia.edu

Runner-up:
SNL Financial
700 E. Jefferson St.
295-4381
snl.com

Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life. That’s what they say, anyway, and if that saying is to be believed, then a lot of folks at UVA and SNL aren’t really working—because they liked their jobs enough to land their employers in the No. 1 and 2 spots in this new category this year. Keep up the good “work!”

Runner-up:
Ed Lowry of
Michie-Hamlett
500 Court Square, Suite 300
951-7200
michiehamlett.com

In 1995, inmate Robert Lee Brock claimed he violated his own civil rights by drinking alcohol against his religious beliefs and subsequently getting arrested. Once imprisoned, he sued himself for $5 million, then asked the state to pay because he had no income in jail. That’s a somewhat extreme legal case, but readers are confident Tucker Griffin Barnes would be able to get them out of any scrape—from family matters and injury and disability to criminal law and real estate cases. Ed Lowry of Michie-Hamlett, in the runner-up spot, takes on commercial litigation.

mjhplasticsurgery.org

Runner-up:
Stephen Park
415 Ray C. Hunt Dr.
924-2153
cosmeticuva.com

Plastic surgery sure has come a long way: For the very first nose job, performed in 600 B.C., wooden tubes were placed inside the nose to keep air passage open during healing. These days, that procedure (and many others) go a little differently, and readers say Victoria Vastine, with Martha Jefferson Hospital, is the person they trust most. UVA’s Stephen Park takes the number two slot. Readers choose him when they want to put their best face and neck (Park limits his practice to just those areas of the body) forward.

The dermatologist has been serving patients in Charlottesville since 1991, and extends her work out of the area, too. She’s also the consulting dermatologist for Love Without Borders, which provides medical care to orphans throughout China. The longest tooth ever pulled, belonging to Singapore resident Loo Hui Jing, measured in at 1.26″. There’s never been quite as big an extraction at the Swetts’ practice (Mr. Jing continues to the world record), but readers feel confident the husband-and-wife team would be up to the task. They take the lead in this category again this year, along with David Dalley, who’s been practicing dentistry since 1982.
