Best community theater 2013: Live Arts

Live Arts

livearts.org

Runner-up:
Four County Players
5256 Governor Barbour St. (Barboursville)
(540) 832-5355
fourcp.org

The idea of “community theater” too often conjures images of wannabe stars performing on hack-job sets. Unless, of course, you’re talking about our community. Here, we’re lucky enough to get legit productions with talented local actors. At Live Arts this year, audiences raved about everything from August: Osage County and In The Next Room to A Chorus Line and Legally Blonde: The Musical. Over in Barboursville, Central Virginia’s longest running theater, Four County Players, put on excellent productions of Into the Woods and Godspell, to name a couple.

In 2010, the Art of Living Foundation in Ahmedabad, India, created the largest buffet in history, with 5,612 different dishes. Your pick for best buffet doesn’t have quite that many options, but who needs them anyway? Options are for people who can’t make up their mind and readers clearly can. They voted Milan the best buffet again this year, just ahead of 29N’s Wood Grill, which gives you a little taste of everything.

Best foot race 2013: Women’s 4-miler

Women’s 4-miler

Runner-up:
Charlottesville 10-miler

There are many benefits to running the women’s 4-miler (supporting UVA’s Breast Care Program, improving your health and stamina), but perhaps the most interesting component of the Labor Day weekend run is its training program, which begins two months before the 4-miler and ensures your readiness for the big day. Plus, you meet a slew of interesting women all working toward the same goal. The Charlottesville 10-miler, which began 38 years ago, takes second place.

There are currently at least 12,000 restaurants in the U.K. serving curry. There are far fewer in Charlottesville, but readers are glad not to have such tough decisions to make. Milan offers a spicy menu of curry options (tell the waiter you want it “Indian hot” and see if you can take the heat), while Just Curry returned to the Downtown Mall this spring after a few years away. Owner Alex George serves up six varieties in mini, medium, or large with Indo-Carribbean sides like peas and rice or plantains.

The dermatologist has been serving patients in Charlottesville since 1991, and extends her work out of the area, too. She’s also the consulting dermatologist for Love Without Borders, which provides medical care to orphans throughout China. In second place, Anna Magee at Charlottesville Dermatology, who has been in private practice in Charlottesville for almost 20 years.

Erika Proctor: To the animal rescue

In the 13 years since she’s been an animal behavior specialist, Erika Proctor has fostered 387 animals—and she’s only kept three for herself. The founder of nonprofit organization Green Dogs Unleashed, Proctor realized how little is known about therapy dogs, so in 2007 she began establishing the Troy-based business to rescue special needs animals, rehabilitate them, and professionally train them to become therapy dogs for special needs humans. In 2013, it was official.

The mission, Proctor said, is to “improve the quality of life for individuals with special needs and veterans with PTSD, by conducting volunteer pet-facilitated therapy.”

The animals that aren’t suitable for the program, she adopts out or transfers elsewhere. All told, around 900 rescue dogs have passed through her doors since November of 2011—100 of those since January alone.

Most of those are success stories, but there are a few in particular that are close to her heart.

“Six years ago, I watched as a truck drove up and tossed a brick-sized white ball out the window and sped off,” she said. Proctor ran out to see what it was and found a Great Dane puppy lying in the driveway. Unresponsive to sound and squinty-eyed, the dog was the product of a “double merle” breed, which leads to both deafness and blindness.

“We were advised these dogs do not live full lives and can become vicious, and the most humane thing we could do was euthanize her,” Proctor said. “It was not going to happen.” Serendipity, as Proctor named her, is 6 years old now.

“Her world is dark and quiet, but filled with perfect love and acceptance. Something we, as human beings, could learn from.”

Runner-up:
College Inn
1511 University Ave.
977-2710

The idea of delivery—a.k.a. dinnertime for lazy people—is already a brilliant one. Add to that concept restaurant-quality food brought straight to your door and it’s almost too good to be true. That’s what readers get with Basil Mediterranean Bistro: dishes like the Pear & Cheese (beggar’s purses, cremini mushrooms, walnuts, pears, and basil with a gorgonzola cream sauce) or the Chicken Shwarma (chicken, onions, Romaine lettuce, Roma tomatoes, and tsatziki sauce in a pita) can be at your house faster than you can say “Let’s eat.” And here’s more good news: If you’re drooling, you’re already at home. At College Inn, order anything from burgers to souvlaki to a chef salad.

Runner-up:
Citizen Burger Bar
212 E. Main St.

In “The Simpsons,” it’s “Moe’s Tavern.” In “Cheers,” it was, well, Cheers. In Charlottesville, say readers, the best place to go where everyone knows your name to watch the game and grab a beer is Boylan Heights. The prep school-themed Corner joint has 20 HDTVs strategically placed for maximum viewing throughout the restaurant and 15 beers on tap. As for Citizen, this quote from the restaurant’s website says it all: “Give me burgers, beers, and ballgames, or give me death!” The Downtown Mall spot delivers all three.

In 1998, Burger King went fry-to-fry against McDonald’s to see who served the best spuds. The debate was never truly settled (though Burger King did end up giving away 15 million orders of fries in one day as part of an elaborate marketing campaign), but it doesn’t matter. Neither holds a candle to our local options. In first place, Five Guys, with regular or Cajun flavors. In second place, newcomer Citizen, where the sweet potato frites make for a perfect accompaniment to the joint’s top-notch burger options.

Runner-up:
Greg Viar at ACME Tattoo

According to Maxim, the five most painful places to get a tattoo are the back of the knees, the palm of the hand (or between the fingers), the torso and ribs, the Adam’s Apple, and the inner elbow. It’s really up to you whether or not you want to brave it, but readers return to Ben Miller for expertise and artistry—and his steady hand! On 14th Street, Greg Viar at ACME buzzes into second place.
