Crowd pleasers

April is here and so is Charlottesville’s annual Tom Tom Festival, flooding the downtown area with events, music, and people. The festival has grown substantially in its 12 years, and is slated to span five days, from April 17-21, with a medley of different showcases including panels on technology, entrepreneurship, social justice, and consciousness.

With such a broad docket, visitors may wonder, is it a music festival or a conference? Is it a conference or a block party? Is it a block party or a showcase of projects happening in Charlottesville?

“How about, yes and?” says Tom Tom founder Paul Beyer. “It’s both, and. I think people tend to think of things in binary terms, like this is music or this art or this is a conference. But I’m hoping people see Tom Tom as a both, and.”

Beyer welcomes the macroscopic view. He says when people come together from different areas and interests, they start having conversations and building together.

“One of the core insights to me, when the festival was started, was just that there were a lot of areas of the city where people were in silos, they just weren’t talking to each other. In a city like Charlottesville, it’s just crazy, we’re not that big of a town.”

The festival has ballooned with all those conversations, inviting in over 250 speakers this year. And one word this year’s festival-goers will hear repeated frequently is, “future.” With panels discussing the future of AI, the future of financial freedom, the future of DEI, and the future of community, Tom Tom’s conversations are sure to focus on looking forward.

“The core ideas, I think, are future and community. Those are the two beating hearts of the festival,” Beyer says. “What does a shared future look like for the community?”

With a heavy emphasis on business development and investing, Tom Tom’s answer to that seems to be rooted in entrepreneurship, innovation, investment, and startup businesses in Charlottesville.

Over half of the festival’s panel discussions address startups, innovators, and investing, while over half of the festival’s steering committee comes from investment backgrounds.

Kate Byrne, a Tom Tom board member and staff member, has decades of experience in impact investing, the practice of investing in businesses for their social and environmental effects. She says business can be a catalyst for social change.

“I think what we’re trying to do is see how we can make business be a force for good and help entrepreneurs through creating jobs,” Byrne says. “So, we’re helping the workforce, we’re helping, not just a company, but the entire ecosystem that supports a company.”

Some of the major sectors Tom Tom plans to highlight include digital technology, biotechnology, medicine, and education, but smaller, solo entrepreneurs will have some of the spotlight as well.

A highlight of the Tom Tom Festival, and a chance to hear about and directly invest in some of those innovative ideas, is the annual Crowdfunded Pitch Night. Considered one of the fest’s signature events, the evening exemplifies some of Tom Tom’s goals of bringing together community and ideas to generate shared support.

The event is held in the Code Building, where 11 contestants pitch their idea for the support of the crowd.

“The pitch nights are a packed, energetic room filled with really vocal supporters,” Beyer says. “It feels almost like an athletic event because people are so engaged with what’s happening onstage, and so supportive.”

There’s a bar and a DJ, and competitors have a chance to mingle with the crowd before and after taking the stage. When their turn comes, participants are ushered on stage by a song of their choosing and have three minutes to deliver their message to the audience. Audience members then vote for the idea they want to support with tickets, each worth $5, that can be bought online or in the back of the room.

“The pitch night is like a highly engaging way for the entrepreneur to share with the community what their business is,” Beyer says. “They get to distill down their vision and why it matters to that one sentence. That is one of the most essential things that any entrepreneur needs to do is to really understand how to share a vision with their community.”

The evening is sponsored and hosted by the Community Investment Collaborative, a nonprofit that helps under-resourced entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. Many of the participants are previous graduates of CIC’s 16-week entrepreneurship workshop.

“Our program is focused more on the kind of local mom-and-pop businesses as opposed to kind of high tech, high growth businesses that are also a big part of entrepreneurship,” says CIC President Stephen Davis. “We’re focused on the folks who might start as a catering company, become a food truck, become a restaurant. Or we’re focused on the hair salon.”

Some recognizable CIC grads include Mochiko, FARMacy, Wich Lab, Alakazam Toys, High Tor Gear Exchange, Rivanna River Company, Gryphon Gymnastics, and Althea Bread.

“In our 12 years, we’ve had over 560 graduates of our workshop,” Davis says. “About 150 to 160 new businesses have launched through that and a lot of existing businesses have grown.”

In addition to the crowd’s votes, CIC offers a $5,000 grand prize to a winner selected by a panel of three judges.

“I think all in all last year there was probably about, I think, close to 1,000 votes overall,” says Davis. “It was probably around $5,000 to $6,000 in prizes from the crowdfunding part, besides CIC’s grand prize, so all in all it was over $10,000.”

Each participant gets to take home the money from the votes they earned, but there are other rewards, like exposure.

According to Davis, “the people who win aren’t always the ones who get the most out of the competition. Just about every year there have been folks who, as a part of the competition, met people who became investors or big supporters that helped the launch or grow their business. It might not be all they need to start but it might help them with the next step or one part of it.”

Davis says the strength of small businesses is integral to the strength of the community.

“Not only because those businesses are all the collective livelihoods of its owners and employees,” he says, “but in general, small businesses entrepreneurship is creating value in a community. You’re selling that value but you’re creating value whether it’s fun, food, services that are needed, anything that’s quality of life.”


Past Pitches

Mahogany and Friends

Janasha Bradford won the grand prize in 2023 for her financial literacy brand, Mahogany and Friends, which produces fun, imaginative children’s books geared toward educating kids on the topic.

“I was very nervous,” Bradford admits. “This was my first pitch ever. My business, at the time, I don’t think it was even a year and a half old.”

Bradford, a financial advisor, says that “in my career, there are not a lot of women advisors and definitely not a lot of minority financial advisors. I wasn’t introduced to that information early on. And studying, I noticed a lot of my counterparts didn’t have to really break down what some of the terminology meant, so there was an extra layer to my studying.”

Bradford started her pitch with her story. “I just said, ‘How many of you wish you’d learned about money growing up as a child? And if you did, do you think you would have made some different choices?’ Then I kind of told them why, for me, that’s a yes to both.”

With the grand prize and some working of the crowd, Bradford estimates that she raised about $10,000.

“Oh it had a major impact,” she says. Anything helps a small business, but the money from that pitch allowed her to apply to and attend Essence Fest, a cultural festival where she was able to introduce Mahogany and Friends to a crowd of over 50,000 people.

Dr. Kanks

Cynthia Kankeu is a biomedical scientist, and even when she was pursuing her Ph.D., she was working on producing her line of natural, plant-based skin and hair care products.

“I was actually struggling with dry hair myself. Whenever I wanted to define my curls, I was using products that would just leave my hair very dry,” Kankeu says. “I was wondering why I couldn’t find a product for my hair and because I couldn’t find that product, I started wondering, how could I actually make one.”

Kankeu won the grand prize in 2022. The money allowed her to take the leap, quit teaching, and move her operation to a warehouse in Richmond. Now her business is her full-time job. Dr. Kanks products can be found at the Ix Farmer’s Market, Integral Yoga, and in the Charlottesville Wegmans.

The Scrappy Elephant

That same year, in 2022, Sarah Sweet was the crowdfunded winner, taking home the most votes for her business idea. The Scrappy Elephant is a creative reuse center designed to divert art and craft materials from the landfill. Located in McIntire Plaza, the shop offers art classes, studio space to come and craft, and bulk, recycled art material of every variety.

When Sweet came to the crowdfunded pitch night, her business was located in Palmyra and she needed to expand. She heard about the event through CIC.

“It was terrifying because I hate public speaking. But it was wonderful. I just rehearsed a lot and didn’t really talk to anybody because I was so nervous,” Sweet says.

Sweet managed to raise about $2,500 from the crowd’s votes. It was just enough to afford a deposit on her new space in McIntire Plaza. But that was enough to make a tremendous difference. Sweet says her business has tripled since opening the new location. She’s expanding the store and was able to go in full-time on her passion.

“I wouldn’t be here, I don’t think, if I hadn’t won that. Or I would be in a lot of debt and owing money. So it was wonderful, it was amazing,” Sweet says.


On April 17 at 7pm, 11 contestants will have the opportunity this year to sweet talk the crowd and the judges. The ideas range from the digital sphere to social activism, and sustainability to wellness. Like past contestants, some of these ideas could become treasured features of the Charlottesville landscape in the years to come.

Let’s get together: Tom Tom connects entrepreneurs to, well, everybody

Spring is coming, and so is the Tom Tom Summit & Festival. [UPDATE: Originally slated for April, Tom Tom has been rescheduled for September 21-27, 2020.] Every year, the event mixes music, community art projects, and a plethora of innovative business ideas. We caught up with Tom Tom’s executive director, Paul Beyer, for a look ahead at this year’s fest.

Can you share any success stories coming out of Tom Tom’s business competitions?

Tom Tom’s competitions range from crowd-funded pitch nights targeted toward individuals and very early-stage small business to equity-based challenges seeking to match investors with scalable technology companies. Over the past several years, there have been hundreds of thousands of dollars invested at Tom Tom. Success at Tom Tom can mean a start-up entrepreneur receiving the encouragement to keep going—even if they don’t “win”—or an investment. Last year’s winner of the crowdfunded pitch night was Babylon Microfarms. They have continued to grow, and recently raised $2.3M in capital to expand their business.

What will help Charlottesville thrive in the 21st century on the creative, entrepreneurial, industry, and innovation side?

My dream for 21st-century Charlottesville is one in which we’re able to become a welcoming home to all types of residents—a city that is filled with opportunity, and encouraging to dreamers, creators, and entrepreneurs. In terms of opportunity, we’re beginning to make real strides here with various educational and entrepreneurial programs that level the playing field. In terms of encouragement, that is something that we as a community have to continue to get better at. In a lot of respects, Charlottesville is a very successful and affluent place, and thus it can fall into complacency. We can sometimes be a little apathetic or even negative to new ideas. At Tom Tom we really try to make sure that creators of all kinds are honored and celebrated.

How has Tom Tom been integral to pushing those qualities forward since it was founded?

I think Tom Tom’s best quality is being grassroots, which allows many people to contribute in different ways. We invite people to join our programs or to create their own to accomplish their organization’s goals. I’d like to think that creates a sense of “ownership.” Tom Tom’s goal is to create a platform that can model how stakeholders can work together throughout the year.

How do you see local organizations and artists contributing to business development locally?

One of Charlottesville and Albemarle’s best assets is a vibrant culture and quality of life— which are directly related to the artists and nonprofits in the region. We wouldn’t have anywhere near the level of startup activity if entrepreneurs didn’t want to locate here and stay here. Of course, one of my biggest concerns—one that is shared by many of our neighbors—is that our housing and commercial spaces are increasingly unaffordable, and many artists have been priced out of living here.

What sort of business-related headliners can we expect in April?

We’ll be announcing our headliners in the coming weeks. They include Bruce Katz, author of The New Localism, and The Atlantic’s Jim and Deb Fallows, all of whom write about the conditions that communities need to foster in order to have more vibrant and prosperous entrepreneurial communities. We also have serial entrepreneur Tiffany Norwood and restauranteur/chef (and UVA grad) Tanya Holland heading our way.

Making change: CHS teens talk with March for our Lives co-founder Jaclyn Corin

Recently, a racist online comment threatening many of our peers at Charlottesville High School with an “ethnic cleansing” closed all city schools for two days. While some students brushed the threat off as a joke and went back to school on Monday without a second thought, others struggled to focus on classwork, and dozens of students joined a walkout organized by the Black Student Union. For many, it was a moment to consider our own role in the community, as both activists and students.

A few of us on the staff of the Knight-Time Review, the CHS newspaper, were given the opportunity to interview Jaclyn Corin, 18, a survivor of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting and a major organizer of the March for Our Lives protest and Never Again movement against gun violence. She’s coming to town on Tuesday to headline the Tom Tom Festival’s Youth Innovation Summit, just a few weeks after another Albemarle teen threatened to shoot up Albemarle High School.

In talking to Corin, we were moved by her courage in coping with the tragedy in her hometown, and her ability to create action out of her experiences. Her tenacity is especially inspiring for us as students still reeling from the threat of racially charged violence. In her eloquence and insight when speaking on gun control, school safety, and mental health, Corin reminded us that we, as students, can influence society and create change.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

C-VILLE: In Charlottesville, obviously, we’ve had a lot of tension in and out of our school since August 12. What advice would you give to student activists on how to build on media attention and create real change as a teenager?

JACLYN CORIN: That’s a packed question! In regards to the media attention, I would say consistency is key. If you’re constantly doing actions and protests and event building with communities, the local news will pay attention. And it’s also about relationship building with local media and with other organizations that might have more clout in the community.

And in regards to just overall advice to teenagers who want to get involved, the first step is that of course one individual has so much power but there’s even more power within a group of people that share a similar desire and the same hunger for change. So I would urge all teenagers to start having conversations about what’s going on in their community, what they want to see changed, and go from there.

What inspired you to found Never Again and March for Our Lives, and what were the stages in building that?

The day after the shooting, I had this immediate urge to do something productive with my time. I realize now that my activism was my coping mechanism. It was the way that I would distract myself after experiencing the unimaginable. And it was really just about not wanting anyone else to have to experience the feelings that I was feeling and that so many families in that community were feeling.

That’s kind of why my immediate action was to organize a lobbying trip up to the capital in Tallahassee. And by the next day I was doing interviews. I was being very active, because I knew that a lot of people weren’t ready to do that and I wanted to make sure that the media wasn’t creating a story for us, that we were telling our own story.

We were really reflecting on how the country reacted after Sandy Hook, and…that nothing really happened after that. We wanted to make sure that something happened after this shooting. And that kind of led us to saying okay, we have to not only mobilize our community but mobilize the entire country against this issue, because it has gone on long enough.

And, you know, we continued after the march by connecting with a bunch of local organizers, registering tens of thousands of voters, having conversations with people that both agree and disagree with us. And we’re still working a year later, building a huge chapter network of youth organizers and pushing legislation.

How has Parkland changed as a community?

Parkland was the safest community in Florida, and I was so, so privileged to live in a community where I could walk down my street and feel safe and not have to worry about the possibility of getting shot. After [the shooting] there’s always this feeling of uncertainty, of, you know, not being safe. And this tragedy not only traumatized the 3,000-plus people that were in school that day, it also directly affected the family members and friends.

What’s so difficult, and what people often forget, is that a lot of places shootings occur can be avoided, but we can’t avoid school. We now have to walk past the building where it occurred every single day.

I think we always reflect on how lucky we are to be alive, and on moving forward to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

What do you think would be the most effective way for schools now to ensure that students are safe at school, until [gun control] legislation and policies are changed?

The biggest thing I think schools can do to support their students is to do preventive health care measures, meaning actually having mental health care providers in schools and not just guidance counselors who do scheduling, and educating students on where they can go for that support. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

And also I just want to emphasize we need to make sure that we don’t put metal detectors in our schools, [police] in our schools, because that doesn’t do anything except make students feel unsafe, and increase the school to prison pipeline. There’s so many situations that show that a good guy with a gun does not always stop a bad guy with a gun.

You’re not just a high school student anymore, you’re an activist—how do you balance that?

It’s definitely a weird experience. March for Our Lives was the first thing I thought about, every day, and I started to burn out a little bit, and then I understood that I need to make time to be a normal teenager, because that’s what I need to do for self-care. Because I also have a lot of trauma that weighs me down every single day.

There’s also level of celebratizing, and I want to make sure we always share our platform. We experienced gun violence in Parkland one day in our lives, and there are people who experience it every day in their communities. There’s a lot we need to keep doing to make sure that they’re being amplified and everyone understands that gun violence is not just mass shootings.

What change have you seen, and do you feel optimistic about the future of gun control legislation in this country, or frustrated by the lack of action?

We’ve seen dozens of state laws be passed that align with the March for Our Lives mission and will help save lives, but unfortunately we haven’t seen a lot of action on the federal level. [But] I am very optimistic. Just yesterday, I went to a hearing in D.C. around extreme risk orders [preventing people at high risk of harming themselves or others from accessing firearms.] The most encouraging thing is these conversations are happening.

At the same time, we need to make sure we keep up the pressure because this is not something that can be swept under the rug, it’s urgent. Every day over a hundred people lose their lives, and 40,000 people annually lose their lives to gun violence.

It’s definitely a difficult thing to understand this is going to take a while, but we have organizers all around the country that are pushing for legislation in their states and we have to make sure we keep calling out legislators and making sure they’re actually listening to their constituents.

The ham biscuit is named Charlottesville’s signature dish

Considering our broad food and drink world, it’s difficult to imagine a single dish that could represent the city’s local food scene. Charlottesville, on account of its geography and demographics, has a more dynamic selection of foods compared to the seafood-obsessed southeastern part of the state and metropolitan areas of Northern Virginia. However, difficult as it might be to identify the dish of the city, a panel of four judges assembled by the Tom Tom Founders Festival made the executive decision that it is the humble ham biscuit.

Leni Sorensen, a culinary historian and the writer behind the Indigo House blog, sees ham biscuits as an inevitability of living in Charlottesville. Sorensen moved here later in life, and the ubiquity of ham biscuits made an impression on her. “They’re everywhere,” she says. “They’re a part of every cocktail party, every museum opening, every kind of festive occasion. I personally know people who would not dream of having a party without ham biscuits.”

Besides its abundance, Sorensen sees the ham biscuit as something that cuts across all spectrums of dining, from gourmet to everyday. Locally, the adaptability of the ham biscuit is extraordinarily clear.

Specialty foods store Feast! has a 2-inch li’l cutie of a slider-style ham biscuit made with local sweet potato biscuits, local ham and a dollop of Virginia spicy plum chutney.

Timberlake Drugs makes its traditional version with a fluffy white biscuit and ham, and there’s the option to add egg and cheese, too.

JM Stock Provisions tops a buttermilk-and-lard biscuit with tasso (spicy, smoky, Louisiana-style ham) and a drizzle of both honey and hot sauce.

The Ivy Inn uses Kite’s Country ham, a sugar-cured ham from Madison County, served with hickory syrup mustard.

The Whiskey Jar also uses Kite’s ham and offers the option of adding egg and cheese.

Ace Biscuit & Barbecue, Fox’s Cafe, Tip Top Restaurant, Commonwealth Restaurant & Skybar, Keevil & Keevil Grocery and Kitchen, Bluegrass Grill & Bakery and plenty of other spots that we don’t have room to name here have ’em, too.

Is this the best IPA ever?

Luddites might want to steer clear of Champion Brewing Company’s new ML IPA, which debuted last week during the Tom Tom Founders Festival. In conjunction with local startup Metis Machine Learning (the “ML” in the name), Champion’s newest beverage was designed via computer. Using machine learning algorithms, information about the nation’s top 10 best-selling IPAs, as well as Charlottesville’s 10 worst-selling IPAs, was fed into a program that output the desired parameters for the theoretical best IPA.

While there are plenty of variables that make up the taste of the beer, they analyzed the beers’ IBUs (International Bittering Unit, a measure of bitterness), SRM (Standard Reference Method, a color system brewers use to determine finished beer and malt color) and alcohol content.

The results for each variable were 60, 6 and 6, respectively, possibly stoking more fear of a machine uprising.

Michael Prichard, founder and CEO of Metis Machine, wants to quash those fears. “All we really wanted to do was arm the brewer with some information they could work with,” he says. “It’s still a craft; we don’t want people to think we’re trying to replace the brewer.”

Hunter Smith, president and head brewer at Champion, confirms: “At the end of the day, all I was given was some parameters. After that, it was brewing as usual.”

Prichard and Smith met at a machine learning talk about a year ago, and they decided to collaborate; it seemed appropriate to have the ML IPA ready to serve during the innovation-focused Tom Tom Festival.

The ML IPA, which could stay on the menu after Tom Tom if the demand is there, is, according to Smith, a “spot-on typical IPA.”

Market Street Wine opens

Back in February, we reported that Market Street Wineshop owner Robert Harllee had decided to retire and sell his shop at 311 E. Market St. to two longtime employees, Siân Richards and Thadd McQuade. Market Street Wineshop 2.0—now called Market Street Wine—will open this weekend, with an open house from 1 to 4pm on Saturday, April 21.—Erin O’Hare

Introducing paffles to Charlottesville

Kathryn Matthews has been obsessed with American breakfast since she was a child, growing up in Grimsby, a small fishing town on the northeast coast of England. Her grandparents would sometimes take her on vacation to Florida, where they’d eat waffles and fluffy American pancakes, which are quite different from the unleavened, more crêpe-like English pancakes. Sometimes, they’d pour batter onto a griddle or into a waffle iron and make the treats themselves.

Matthews has brought her love of sweet American breakfast to 214 W. Water St. with the opening of Iron Paffles and Coffee. She started working as a chef at 16 before studying hospitality and beverage management at university, and has been making paffles—puff pastry baked on a waffle iron—on her own for a while now, though she can’t exactly take credit for inventing the paffle (a quick Google search a few years back showed her as much).

Savory breakfast nuts might want to try the Iron Glory, a paffle topped with local bacon, sausage and cheese omelet topped with sriracha mayonnaise, and those with a sweet tooth might go for the Rise ’N’ Iron, a blueberry paffle covered with cream and local hickory syrup.

For lunch (or perhaps dinner) Matthews and executive chef Dan Giovanetti will cook up paffles such as the Iron Master (southern-fried local organic chicken breast, mac ’n’ cheese and local spring mix) and the Iron Bean (black bean, sweet potato and quinoa patty and finished with smoked salsa). Craving something sweet? Try the Hail Iron—orange cheesecake paffle topped with local strawberry sauce and flaked almonds—or the Peanut BAE, a gluten-free paffle with vegan chocolate ganache and peanut butter whip. The paffles can be made with a special vegan and gluten-free batter for an extra $1.50. Even with the extra charge, nothing costs more than $9, and can be devoured on-site or made to go in a special cardboard paffle carrier that allows for maximum nommage and minimal mess.

Iron will be open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 4pm, Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturday from 10am to 8pm; breakfast will be served until 11 each day, but the Cini-Bacon paffle, made with maple cinnamon cream, candied pecans and bacon, will be on the menu all day.

Tom Tom nom-noms

It’s Tom Tom time, and you know what that means, food fans: nearly a whole week of food trucks, beer tents, cocktail competitions and celebrations of Charlottesville’s farm-to-table culture.

Throughout the week, restaurants such as The Bebedero, Citizen Burger Bar, Heirloom, Rapture, Oakhart Social, Tavern & Grocery and others will appeal to locavore palates with pre-fixe menus that emphasize local ingredients and artisan food producers.

A dozen mixologists will vie for Tom Tom’s top mixologist title with custom festival cocktails made from locally sourced ingredients and served all week at participating restaurants. A panel of judges will consider the creativity, presentation, originality and taste of the submitted cocktails and name their favorite. At the City Market Iron Chef Competition at 10am on Saturday, chefs will have 30 minutes to tour the market, purchase ingredients and cook a 100 percent locally sourced brunch dish in the hopes of wowing the three judges.
