Baby Dee makes a musical scene at Gravity Lounge tonight

And she has a rather unexpected local connection. Read on for more.

It just so happens that Baby Dee, a recent discovery of primo indie label Drag City—a woman whose story involves stints as a sideshow attraction with a few touring carnivals and a position that AllMusic.com describes as a "bilateral hermaphorodite" with the Coney Island circus—performs tonight at Gravity Lounge. (What a coincidence! I’m halfway through Jeffrey Eugenides’ Middlesex!) Command is command, be it of gender or musical instruments, and from what I hear—words of praise from opener Ned Oldham as well as Paul Curreri—the gal knows how to hold court.

I skipped right over Dee’s Black Cab Session when I wrote about the travelling live music series a while ago. Watch it here, then come check out Dee with Oldham and Matty Metcalfe tonight at 7:30pm. Remember: If you miss it, you run the risk of regretting a truly spectacular, overlooked local gig.

And, hey, that fellow in the cab with Dee looks familiar. Now where have I seen that mug before?
