Monday updates: Four on the floor
1. Finally, an arts chaser to the Board of Architectural Review broadcasts! Morgan MacKenzie-Perkins, the director of Sage Moon Gallery LLC, will host a monthly TV segment on Channel 10 called "First Friday Charlottesville" that highlights local galleries’ upcoming exhibits. The first episode features C’ville Arts and Spring Street Boutique, and airs daily at 9:30am and 7:30pm until August 7.
2. Tried and Made? Well, kinda. Try & Make, the term-shrugging, broad-reaching venue that hosted at least one art exhibit and a few multimedia gatherings since its May opening, has closed. In an e-mail, founder Jaymee Martin says that renting the space was "too expensive" and "in a way working against what we actually are interested in doing." Martin had previously sent an e-mail June 10 to her mailing list announcing a month-long "sale" of the Try & Make space for $475, valid from June 22 until July 20.
Curious? Martin pieced together a 38-page book titled Try & Make: A Little Experiment to further explain the rise and fall of her venue. (I read it this morning; you can find a Feedback clip on page 35, next to a drawing of Elmo.) Click here for more details on Martin’s book.
3. The Invisible Hand played a ripping set at The Bridge last Friday, and deserves what coinage you can scrape from those lint-lined pockets of yours for their efforts. Joining them was Dylan Gilbert, who shared a bill previously with the Hand. Check out both in this tour documentary from Gilbert; the Hand pops up at the 4:30 mark:
4. Last, Carrie Brownstein—member of Sleater-Kinney and music blogger for NPR—undertook a project a few weeks ago to turn herself into a Phish fan. Great music reading, and a good analysis of the gap between rabid superfan and outsider. What’s more, Brownstein recently posted a video in which she met up with a few Phish fans to gather wisdom and bootlegs…and learn something about Dave Matthews Band. Check the 1:32 mark:
Anybody want to challenge me to become a superfan of a local band? I’m game, provided you let me turn you into Sleater kin. [Cue me in a Sleater-Kinney t-shirt.]
