Albemarle supervisors uphold $2.03 million commitment to McIntire YMCA

Board also votes to advertise 74.2-cent tax rate, with Mallek and Rooker opposed.

Following a closed session on Monday afternoon, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors reaffirmed the county’s financial support of the much-discussed YMCA planned for McIntire Park—a commitment of $2.03 million.

"We are pleased that the Supervisors recognized the importance of honoring the County’s long-standing commitment to the Y and look forward to working with the County and the City to bring a much-needed YMCA facility to the community," said YMCA Board Chairman Kurt Krueger in a statement. Score one for city-county collaboration, then. The message from the supervisors follows the demise of Delegate Rob Bell’s amendment to the General Assembly’s proposed budget, which proposed to move $2.8 million from Charlottesville schools to Albemarle County schools.

During an interview yesterday afternoon, Supervisor Rodney Thomas, who previously served on the YMCA Board of Directors, said that elected officials in both the city and county are all involved in their jobs "because of compassion." He added that an April meeting between city and county officials, proposed by Delegate David Toscano and slated for April 24, could produce "some interesting things." Looks like we didn’t have to wait for April for one such interesting thing.

Also, it looks as if the real estate tax rate will hold steady at 74.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. The supervisors voted 4-2 in favor of advertising the current 74.2-cent rate, which allows for potential decreases to the rate prior to the next April 1 public hearing, but not increases.
