West Main, Water streets get new bike paths

Along with Alderman Road, the busy Downtown streets will soon feature a few new markings to help motorists and cyclists get along

Starting tomorrow, bicyclists and alternative transportation advocates will see a new round of basic infrastructure improvements along some of the city’s most heavily trafficked roads. A city spokesman says that new pavement markings will be installed along Alderman, West Main and Water roadways beginning Thursday.

The marking on the left shows "where bicyclists should be positioned to be properly recognized by the traffic signal." The marking at center shows cyclists "where they should ride to avoid car doors opening, where they are expected to ride, and remind[s] motorists to expect cyclists on the road." The marking on the right shows the portion of the roadway for preferential use by bicyclists." See them below, and study up:
