Red Light plans venue on Preston

Space near Downtown to host music while work on Jefferson Theater is completed.

While the Jefferson Theater remains a cloaked work-in-progress, the curtain is slowly being drawn on a new music venue in town. Coran Capshaw’s Red Light Management is taking the steps to open a music venue at 608 Preston Ave., in a space connected to the King Lumber building. The Board of Architectural Review will discuss the space’s recommendation for use as a dance hall during tonight’s meeting.

Andy McGinty, a developer involved in converting the King Lumber building into office space, confirms Red Light’s plans for the space.

"They’re looking to go there for a year while the Jefferson Theater space is being renovated," he said in a brief phone interview. When I asked how soon a venue could open in the space, McGinty mentioned that Red Light "talked about starting as soon as they got the special use permit."

"It needs renovations," McGinty mentioned when asked about the timeline for opening a venue at the space. "A sprinkler system would have to be installed, [and they] have to build a stage."
