It takes a village: The United Way brings people together

The United Way – Thomas Jefferson Area knows it takes a village to make our community better. As a stable, flexible and focused leader, United Way brings people together to listen, understand and collaborate to solve problems. Impact areas include School Readiness, Community Health and Self-Sufficiency.

United Way makes a big impact on people’s lives every day. Last year, 51 young children from low-income households received Early Learner Scholarships for high-quality early education programs that prepare them for success in kindergarten. The Cville Tax Aid program, a collaboration led by United Way, prepared 2,598 tax returns for low-income workers, resulting in $3.3M in refunds and a total local economic impact of $3.7M. The RX Relief prescription assistance program served 546 local patients by providing free prescription medications to treat chronic, often life-threatening illnesses. And, the United Way initiated a pilot of its new Family Self-Sufficiency Program, welcoming four families working on personal plans to achieve financial independence. The United Way also provides grants to local programs that make a difference in the Impact Areas of School Readiness, Self-Sufficiency, and Community Health.

Yet, there is much more work to be done. Over 50 children ages 0-5 are currently on the waiting list for United Way Early Learner Scholarships. There is great need, and every scholarship that puts a child on the path to success costs approximately $11,000. “Providing high-quality early education opportunities for low-income children ensures their academic success and ability to meet their peers at grade level when starting kindergarten. The long-term outcome for these children is greatly improved with early proactive interventions that lead to success throughout their academic careers and a stronger economic future. Investing in our children is critical to the health and vibrancy of our community.” – Ravi Respeto, United Way President

By expanding tax preparation sites and recruiting more volunteers thanks to Madison House, the Cville Tax Aid program aims to provide its service to more local low-income taxpayers, but needs support to obtain the equipment, materials, and staffing needed.

In collaboration with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, UVA Health System and the Thomas Jefferson Health District, United Way is working toward health equity in our community, beginning by engaging African-American and Latino community members affected by Type 2 Diabetes. “Our goal is to significantly decrease the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes through strategic partnerships with both Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital and UVA Health System to reach all at-risk community members with long-term sustainable programs focused on prevention,” stated Ms. Respeto.

The Family Self-Sufficiency Program will accept nominations for more families, helping them identify and eliminate specific financial barriers that stand in the way of success.

On Tuesday, November 27, members of the local community are invited to COME TOGETHER with the United Way – Thomas Jefferson Area for #GivingTuesday. By supporting the United Way on #GivingTuesday, your gift will help local families access high-quality early education, healthcare, and opportunities to live self-sufficiently. “When we come together, we can reach higher and farther. We can do more for our community.” UnitedWayTJA.org

Deschutes, now pouring in Virginia

Rejoice, craft beer lovers, because one of the best in the West is heading out East. That’s right—Deschutes beer is now available in stores and on tap in Virginia.

Since their modest beginnings in 1988 as a small public house in Bend, Oregon, Deschutes Brewery has been making some of the tastiest craft beers out west. The family and employee-owned brewery first came to prominence with their acclaimed Black Butte Porter, and has been brewing amazing, award-winning beers since.

Now, after nearly 30 years of commitment in Oregon to brewing delicious beer, maintaining sustainable and environmentally-conscious facilities, and having an all-around great time engaging with the community, Deschutes is opening a new chapter—and a new brewery—here in Virginia. They plan on bringing the same standards, sense of community and, most importantly, the same delicious beer, to their new facilities being built in Roanoke.

And until the doors open for tours and tastings, you can find Deschutes beer on tap and on shelves across Virginia. From their mouthwateringly juicy Fresh Squeezed IPA and quintessentially Northwest Pale Ale, Mirror Pond, to their tasty seasonals like Hop Slice and Armory XPA, Deschutes has a brew for every type of beer lover.

Savvy Rest at the BRHBA Home Show

By: Liz Aivazis

Savvy Rest Natural Bedroom sponsored the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association Home Show at the John Paul Jones Arena this past weekend. Attendees saw our natural products right when they walked in. It was an exciting opportunity for us to show our organic mattresses and our new organic sofas, loveseats and armchairs to the Charlottesville community. We met so many parents, professionals, children—even babies. The event itself was filled with colorful exhibits: a blow-up termite, a Frozen-themed bounce house and an intricate garden display. We gave away an organic pillow every hour during the event and one lucky person won a free mattress!

Several people we spoke with had never heard of organic mattresses and were excited to learn about an alternative to mainstream mattresses that are sprayed with harsh and unhealthy chemicals. We unzipped our organic cotton and wool mattress casings and showed the layers of natural latex so that attendees could get an understanding of how safe and unique our products are. We use certified organic wool instead of chemical flame retardants so that we pass federal fire regulations in a safe manner. Wool acts as a natural fire barrier so there is no need to breathe in harmful chemicals.

The home show was the local debut of our new customizable platform bed, the Esmont. Each of our natural platform beds is made right down the road from our store in Ivy. We use a variety of low- and zero-VOC finishes, and no tools are required for assembly.

Visitors also enjoyed relaxing on our new locally made organic sofas. Made with natural latex and organic fabrics, our furniture is available in 15 colors for cotton, five colors for hemp/cotton blend and five colors for hemp. Customers can also choose between softer and firmer latex cushions. It was incredibly encouraging to see people’s positive reactions to our sofas as they commented on their comfort and style.

Overall, we enjoyed meeting everyone at the home show! It was a fantastic way to reach out to the community and share all the organic products we have to offer. We witnessed enthusiasm and curiosity when people were introduced to the benefits natural products can bring to a home.

Interested in seeing our products for yourself? Stop by our store on Route 250 West in Ivy.

Confused by the Cloud?

Have you heard all the chatter about cloud computing, but you’re still a little foggy when it comes to understanding what it means?  Simone Alley, market development manager for CenturyLink in Virginia can clear it up for you. “Cloud computing refers to storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet or a private connection instead of from your computer’s hard drive” said Simone. “Data isn’t actually stored in a cloud.”

Businesses of all sizes are using cloud computing to host their websites, email programs, databases, testing and development functions, backup files and more. Email programs hosted in the cloud provide full-featured email capabilities—the same ones you have in the office—whether you’re home, on the road or anywhere in the world. You can log in with just an Internet connection. The features you depend on, like your calendar and directories, are always available to you.

According to Simone, there are some simple benefits that almost every business can realize. First and foremost is disaster preparedness. Storing company records, files, and other important data on an off-site server is critical if you’re going to keep your business going after a disaster like a storm, fire, or flood. Using a cloud service to back up your data allows you to access it from remote computers or even mobile devices, should the worst ever happen. It’s no longer necessary to buy expensive storage devices like servers nor install, configure or maintain that hardware. In the cloud, your service provider already invested in the equipment, which is maintained as part of your service.

Security is another primary reason to use cloud.  Spam, viruses and security breaches scare every business owner because the consequences of downtime or losing customers’ data are grave. Cloud-based service providers like CenturyLink offer access to security experts and strong security features.

File-sharing programs made possible with cloud computing improve communication among employees and customers. More businesses are relying on collaborative efforts with secure document-sharing, instant messaging and video conferencing. Buying these services in the cloud eliminates purchasing licenses and installing or updating complex software.

What’s the best way to get to the Cloud? Having a reliable, secure connection through your private or public network is absolutely critical if your business is going to explore Cloud computing solutions. Your data and software applications can only benefit your company if you can access them!

For more information regarding cloud computing or to discuss your specific business needs, please contact Brian Watson, business sales manager at CenturyLink at 434-971-2376 or stop by the CenturyLink Experience Center at 1240 Seminole Trail in Charlottesville.

Your Y Chromosome Is Killing You

Men in the United States die, on average, five years younger than women.

At a cultural moment when men and women are sharing the child-rearing burden more than ever, working in comparable professional environments, and facing the same health risks, why are men still dying so much younger?
